The one page inside Ukraine is a wartime internment camp under Romanian occupation. Grosulovo, now Velyka Mykhailivka in the Odesa region, held its prisoners in a former tobacco depot in the centre of the town. The settlement takes its old name from the officer who bought the land on the left bank of the Kuchurhan in the late eighteenth century; by 1907 it had 750 households and 4,136 inhabitants, and its central part is still called Mistechko.12
Its prisoners were local Jews, Jews deported from Bessarabia and Bukovina, and Ukrainians accused of partisan links and sabotage. Most of the Ukrainian prisoners were handed to the Germans before the October 1943 transfer of deportees in from Vapniarca, and the last group left in March 1944 under a Romanian commandant who marched them to safety.134
