Australia reached agreement with the International Refugee Organisation in 1947 to take displaced persons from the refugee camps. The first sailing left Bremerhaven on 30 October 1947 with 843 displaced persons from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania aboard the USAT General Stuart Heintzelman and reached Fremantle on 28 November, the first of nearly 150 voyages by some forty ships. The contingent recorded on arrival at the newly opened Bonegilla Reception and Training Centre in December was 839.
