Haifa to the Cyprus detention camps, August 1946

Haifa → Cyprus detention camps

On 13 August 1946 the Yagour and the Henrietta Szold were held off Haifa with 1,350 passengers aboard; Famagusta was alerted for arrivals and a troopship lay at Haifa loaded with barbed wire. That month Britain began deporting intercepted immigrants to Cyprus, starting with the 1,300 from those two vessels. About 52,000 people from 39 ships were deported to Cyprus between August 1946 and early 1949.
