The Ukrainian Association of Western Australia records the community's beginning with 60 men arriving at Fremantle on the Kanimbla on 11 October 1948. They formed a dancing group and a choir and gave what the association describes as the first Ukrainian concert in the state before being split into work parties for the Kalgoorlie goldfields, the railways and the Mundaring Weir works. As more people arrived they were settled at Graylands, Northam and Cunderdin.
