The Skaugum had been launched at Kiel in 1940 as the Ostmark, was never completed, was claimed by the British as a prize of war in 1945 and was rebuilt at Kiel in April 1949 for displaced-person work under an IRO contract. She left Naples on 4 July 1949 and reached Melbourne on 28 July; the roll flags 30 August 1949 as an alternative date from the microfilm.
