A Ukrainian memoir published in 1971 describes Antin Drahan and the engineer Yurii Karmanin crossing the Pyrenees at Orbaizeta in October 1943 and spending several weeks in Pamplona provincial prison. At about six in the morning on 1 January 1944 their names were read out, they were tied together in pairs and marched to the railway station in a party of thirty-six. Miranda is about eighty kilometres away, but they did not reach the camp gates until about two in the afternoon.
