Rimini to Britain, May and June 1947

Rimini camp, Italy → British prisoner-of-war camps

The British Cabinet approved the transfer to the United Kingdom on 1 April 1947. During May and June 8,570 people travelled from Venice to Britain, including 17 nurses, clergy and some civilian relatives, and entered British prisoner-of-war accommodation mainly in eastern England and southern Scotland. Release from prisoner-of-war status and admission to the European Voluntary Workers scheme followed between August and October 1948, after which the camps became civilian hostels.
