May 1945
Spittal, Austria → Rimini camp, Italy
About 10,000 men of the Galicia Division surrendered to the British Army in Austria in May 1945 and were interned near Spittal. Between May and June the division was moved to Italy and interned near Bellaria, where about a thousand men were persuaded to return to the Soviet Union. In October 1945 the remainder were moved to a camp near Rimini. A cross-section was screened by a Soviet mission in August 1945 and a further cross-section by the Refugee Screening Commission in February 1947.
