In July 1949 the Gippsland Times reported that construction had begun at the former RAAF station at West Sale so that it would be ready as a dependants’ holding centre in August, providing for some 500 people besides staff; its occupants would be the wives and children of displaced persons, who would stay until the husbands allotted to employment could make other arrangements.
