Disused coffee warehouses beside the railway at Campo Limpo Paulista were fitted out as São Paulo state's hostel for postwar refugees and ran from 1947 to 1951, because the state's usual building at Brás had been handed to the air ministry in 1943 and housed an aviation school.12
The arrivals came under the resettlement programme of the International Refugee Organisation, which sent about 29,000 refugees to Brazil, some 7,000 of them Ukrainians. Most landed at Rio de Janeiro and travelled on to São Paulo, and Ukrainians were the second largest group registered at Campo Limpo, 1,386 entries in three years, before moving into work in and around the city.3456
That registration total is the firmest figure the page has, and it counts entries in a hostel book over three years rather than the Ukrainians who settled in the state. The rest of the evidence is museum material: identity certificates, photographs and the hostel's own institutional history.57
Brazil received 23,354 of the 690,145 people resettled in that period.
