The two French pages come from opposite ends of the war. Frontstalag 154, Fourchambault and Garchizy was a German prisoner of war camp of the summer of 1940, in a former railway wagon works on the boundary between the two communes a few kilometres from Nevers. The Beauregard camp, La Celle-Saint-Cloud, in the park of a ruined château west of Paris, was the central assembly camp of the Soviet repatriation mission from late 1944 until French police closed it in November 1947.12
Ukrainians appear in each as a group inside a much larger population. At Fourchambault they were soldiers of the Polish Army of Ukrainian origin captured in the fall of France, visited by Ukrainian Greek Catholic priests from Paris whose mission papers are dated November and December 1940. At Beauregard they were among the former prisoners of war, forced labourers and interwar émigrés passing through on the way to the USSR, out of roughly 120,000 Soviet nationals in France in 1944.345
Neither page can give a Ukrainian figure. The French and German records count prisoners, Soviet citizens and camp movements, and the Ukrainian presence is established by pastoral papers and by the repatriation mission's own paperwork rather than by any nationality return.67
France received 36,886 of the 690,145 people resettled in that period.
