The single New Zealand page is a reception and training centre for people already accepted for resettlement. Pahīatua Reception and Training Centre in the North Island ran from 1949 to 1952, giving language instruction, an introduction to citizenship and local customs, and preparation for employment, with a stay of at least four weeks planned before people moved into the wider community.1
The government described its selected group in 1949 as consisting mainly of Baltic refugees, alongside Ukrainians and others, so the Ukrainians here are named within a mixed intake rather than counted. A contemporary newspaper report records one draft coming ashore from the Hellenic Prince in October 1950 and lists the categories of passenger aboard.12
The surviving material is photographic and administrative: the teachers' archive now held at Manawatū Heritage, camp memoranda about receiving each draft, and the commemoration panels installed on the site much later. There is no Ukrainian population figure for the centre.345
New Zealand received 1,066 of the 191,119 people resettled in that period.
After the journey from Europe, Pahīatua gave displaced families a temporary home while they learned English and prepared for work across New Zealand. Ukrainians were among the newcomers to this busy reception centre, the third community to occupy a camp built for wartime internment.
