The two Israeli pages are camps of detention and of arrival rather than of Ukrainian settlement. The British Mandate government built Atlit Detention Camp south of Haifa in 1939 to hold Jewish immigrants who reached Palestine without permits, and more than 40,000 people passed through its wire before 1948. Sha’ar HaAliyah opened in March 1949 in the former British army camp of St Luke's, as the state's central immigrant reception and screening camp, and nearly 400,000 people went through it before it closed in 1962.12
The Ukrainian connection here is one of origin rather than community. Survivors from places now in Ukraine were among those held at Atlit, and Sha’ar HaAliyah received a family from Radyvyliv whose memoir is that page's one direct link, recording the route out through Poland and the months spent in the camp.34
Neither camp recorded a Ukrainian group, and neither can be counted for one. The registers list ships and immigration certificates rather than regions of birth, and the published histories count arrivals by voyage.52
Israel received 116,368 of the 690,145 people resettled in that period.
